snake hunger strike.....help....

clownloach Dec 13, 2003 09:20 AM

my boy is only eating once a month and the only thing that he will eat is a gerbel, i tried to give him rat and mouse but he will not take them, i tried live, dead and frozen thawed, but he will not take either one of them, just the gerbel, which he devoured in about 15 seconds, is this a good idea to feed him a gerbel and then an mouse right after the gerbel, cause that is what he did last time? or am i hurting him by just feeding him gerbels?

If you have good availabilty of gerbils and that what he wants, then go with it.

I have found that males in particular tend to be the most finicky eaters...especially this time of year. When the weather cools they know and they go into breeding mode.

I have had males not eat anything for 6 months and then one day it's all they can do to get the food quick enough. When they are eating...feed them well because they will inevitably go on another hunger strike again.

You might want to try a smaller gerbil and when he finishes have a small rat ready and insert it right behind the gerbil. Be sure to use forcepts, this might get him back to rats. Alot of times they will continue to eat once the action has started.
