Boo is doing something weird.........>>>

RedQuake Dec 13, 2003 10:45 AM

I was in Nalas tank misting her humid hide (with her out of it) and of course she lets out a wail like i'm trying to kill her. She's the one i think is male but can't get close enough to tell cause she attacks me every time LOL

Well just after closing up her tank, she's still wailing at this point, i notice Boo is licking his butt. Upon closer inspection i find that theres white stuff coming out of both sides of his opening and his tail is up in the air.....He licked for a good while, the stuff is gone now and he's sleeping.

I've never seen him lick poop from his butt and it was all white no dark stuff so i'm thinking he got ummmmmmmmm excited??? If this is true, would a male do that if he hears another male or if he hears a female?

Any insight into this observation is greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Red

Red,

I have seen this in one of my males too. It happened when I put the female into his cage to start a breeding attempt. The first thing he did was stand up real high on all four legs, then he started licking himself. He wasnt licking his butt though, he was licking himself in the other spot When my male was doing it, I could clearly see at least one of the hemipenises out and i think thats what he was licking. My male also had a gooey white mass that he seemed to be cleaning up as well... but I dont think it was urate... eeewwww. Anyways, I think it might be just the males way of "getting ready". He could have indeed heard your female screaming and got excited. I hope your mystery gecko doesnt turn out to be a superaggressive "hot-female" Did you hatch that gecko yourself? If she screams and attacks you every time you come near.. she just may be. Just a thought. Im sure if more people with experience replied to this, they would say they've seen their males doing similar things at breeding time. Hope this helps.

Joe

Thanks so much.....This female i bought in a group from a breeder. None of them were fond of being held but she just freaked......her first handling (outside of being put in her tank) was a soaking after i noticed she wasn't shedding on her toes. She's had non stop problems since i got her with shedding even with a humid hide. I think she just relates me with being put in a container with some warm water and hates it. I have been able to hand feed her but she has to be really hungry cause she won't even come out of her hide as all the others do when i put the mealies in. Most of the time i go into her tank is to clean, put in food or try to moisten her humid hide. This usually all takes place in one sittng so i dont' have to keep going in and out, of course cleaning is last so i dont' contaminate her food. I really like her despite the attitude....she's such a bright white compared to my other supposedly male blizzard. He's alot duller and quite a bit smaller but he's a sweety.....he'll only open his mouth wide at me when i pick him up....but all i do is tell him to shut it and i'll put him back and he does.........every time I've got 7 in all and only 2 males.....or so i hope. Having two blizzard males will just suck...but i can handle it. Two of my geckos aren't growing as huge as the others.....most of them have trippled in size, these two have only doubled, growing just not as much. Boo is the largest i have and i know he knows theres girls around....but seeing him do what he did was weird.....

Thanks for your help, sorry this was so long hehe

Isn't it cute how they open their mouths like that? Caesar did it when the vet was holding him. Every time her other hand came near, he'd open his mouth. It was really convenient, because she was trying to check the inside of his mouth anyway. And then he pooped on her. lol He was sick at the time, so I was really proud of him for putting up a fight with the vet. He even screamed when the vet tech picked him up to weigh him in the beginning. He never gave me any trouble though. He's actually grown up to be one of my sweetest leos and definitely one of my favorites.

I have a question for you though. Do you feel like you have enough leos, or do you still think about getting more?

You can never have to many LOL..............

HEHEHE i'm resisiting the urge to get more......My 40 gal is now empty and i've got some more room (been moving furniture around alot to get more room hehe) so i could get more BUT no i dont' plan on buying any right now. I went to the shop where i got Boo and they had 2 blizzards and 2 patternless babies, extra stock from the breeder i got my group from i'm sure......but they were priced really high. It did take every ounce of strength to not buy them.......and i did well

I'm going to breed my group next year (hopefully!!!) so i'll have plenty of babies of my own i hope. The 7 i have are a handful as it is and i like being able to spend time with them individually....seems my life is all about work and geckos LOL.

Yeah, I have 8 now. I do have room for more, but I'm at the point where I feel like I would be crossing the line from keeping them as pets to merely collecting them.
