Shedding, Bathing and Feeding

deejay17 Dec 13, 2003 11:39 AM

I have been reading a lot about these three things. I have not seen Oregano shed at all. I have had him since June and I have been cleaning him once a week with a soft toothbrush (is this too much). I just do it with some tippid water and the toothbrush. I was told at the pet store not to use any kind of soap on him. Back to the Shedding part, are they suppose to shed so much (from all the readings)? For feeding: He is 2", I feed him 4 pellets in the morning and 4 in the evening. The instructions on the feed bottle say "feed one to two times a day only as much as your pet can consume within several minutes." He also has plants in the tank that he seems to really like to munch on. Am I feeding him enough or too much? He isn't fat or bulging out of his shell or anything. Plus on Wednesday I am going to get a bunch of feeders because we are going on vacation. I was going to get guppies, rosy reds and ghost shrimp, plus he will have his plants.
Thanks
Deejay

I think it is fine that you don't notice any shedding. When they shed noticeably it can be a sign of a problem like too much food or too warm water. 8 pellets a day sounds like a lot of food. Are they regular sized pellets or the tiny hatchling pellets? The rule of thumb is to feed young turtles once a day as much as would fit into their head. As they get older you feed them less often. I do not "bathe" my turtles but warm water and a toothbrush surely can't hurt anything if you want to do it.

Sounds like a lucky turtle.

They are hatchling pellets.
