day/night temperatures...Please give advice!

jwr0201 Dec 13, 2003 11:43 AM

This is my leos first winter and I'd like to know how the temps look in their set-up. First, all are very healthy with nice fat tails and are eating well. There are three females in a 20 long tank with three hides. The UTH is a Cobra that gets the warm end to 90 in summer and now is only at 80 in winter. I have been only using the UTH days and off nights. Night temp gets down to 65-70. My question is whether I need to go with a larger UTH or simply add a heat lamp with a red heat bulb. Also, will a 50 watt red heat bulb be likely to be enoug? Please give some advice! I want my leos to be as comfy as possible. Thanks! RR

since the UTH goes down to the 80s because of winter, then you might want to just leave that on during the night because leos need 80F during the night in addition to belly heat for late night digestion in case they go for a snack. if it's 65F-70F with the UTH, then you'll need to get a red heat bulb. i'm not sure what wattage you should use because i use a reptile thermostat to change the temps in my leo's tank. also, if it doesn't hit the high 80s during the day, you might want to consider a low wattage light bulb. good luck!

Thanks for the reply - do you think that a low wattage regular soft white bulb would work ok? I mean as far as it being bright in the tank. The leos now have diffused natural light in the room. The hides are definitely dark, so they could get out of the light. Also, is it likely that the light alone during the day would be ok for heat? Thx! RR
