superchunk Dec 13, 2003 01:33 PM

I have 2 tegus (1.1) housed together. they were purchased 1 week apart from same location. my problem is the male seems to be in brumation while female is in hibernation---do they need to be seperated?--BRIAN

I'm a newbie to Tegus but with snakes, hibernation and brumation mean the same thing, the terms are interchangeable, so I'm not quite sure what you mean? Is one hibernationg or brumating, and one still active?

while the female is in hibernation , the male seems to be somewhere in the middle--he will tunnel deep into mulch not coming up for several days, sometime a week; but surfaces for couple of hours of basking--no interest in food--and returns to his hideout--i dug him up once and he was out cold--i just thought that was brumation---i've only had tegus for about one month---BRIAN

Sorry to hear that you’re not seeing your new pets much :/ I know how you feel mine did the same thing right after I got them. I just had to wait till they snapped out of it. I think it'd be fine to keep them in the same cage. You might want to offer him some water when he comes out if you haven't already.

thanks for writing back Rollin---as of right now female is 100% hibernating.male emerges from time to time --i always offer water and food--he took me up on it yesterday---he pounded about 20 gut loaded/dusted crickets---today he emerged from mulch tunnel and basked for 4 hours-pooped and dug in----i am totally relieved that everything seems to be on right track--ordered a large variety of frozen mice yesterday---BRIAN
