Watering Hole for Torts

crazycreations Dec 13, 2003 02:26 PM

I am currently renovating my outside tortoise pen. I am looking to make a few small "watering holes". They would have to be easy to get in and out of. What would be the best thing to make these small ponds for the torts out of? Should I use plaster pairs, or a plastic tub, or what? Thanks.

Depending on the size of the tort a lot of people swear by the pans for water heaters. They come in plastic and metal. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by water heaters?

Water heater...that big thing in your basement that gives you hot showers.

I tried this for my tort but was told it may leak dangerous
metals into the water. A plastic one should be better.

I would dig a shallow hole and line it with lathe (wire mesh), and then concrete (a mix of mortor and portland cement). To get really elaborate, dig a trench and put in a drain (prior to cement). This might require a little bit of shovel work to bring the pool up a bit to allow for drainage. At the bottom of the pool have a female pipe adapter to screw a stand pipe into (unscrew to drain). Allow the cement to cure for a while before letting torts have it.
