green spots on satanic leaftails?

em1515 Dec 13, 2003 04:26 PM

hey, i was in a pet store the other day (which is horrible and i hate it each time i go in there even more, everything is kept in horrible conditions, i dont know how they got to be "san diegos #1 pet store) and they had some satanic leaftails that were really nice, but had some light green spots on them that looked like some kinda fungus but could have also been part of their camoflage? i dunno, just figured id ask, i wouldnt be surprised if they were horribly ill. thanks.

I would recommend closely examining them. I know of no desease that produces green skin in those guys and they do have some camo. I would probably vouch that they're fine but its always best to go in for a closer look. If it is bumpy or rough (different than the rest of the skin) then there is a possibility that it is a fungus of some sort. The only way I can see this happening if they overmist the cage tremendously.

Green spots are found on U. phantasticus, U. ebenuai, U. sikorae, U.ssp., and U.henkeli. This is just part of the their camoflauge. It's is sometimes more apparent on U. phant. and U. eben. than the others, because of their other colors may be a more solid rather than a mossy orbark appearance where the greens blend better and dont stand out as much as they do with these two. Uroplatus are awesome. I kept them for few years, and they are a lot easier than people say. Its sad that people get rid of them because they wont breed for them. Most Uros wont breed until they feel secure and comfortable in their new enclosure. Give them time before you get rid of them people!

Pic is of a gravid U. lineatus a yr. ago..

Agreed. These geckos rock. The 2 lined we have at work are great to handle and a trip to watch. Those black tongues are a sight to see. Anyway I dont think its too big a problem with the blotch so if you're considering getting them I would say go for it if the price is right. (If you want, you can maybe even sneak a discount by saying its a rare disease just make sure to find a person who not knowledgeble on geckos. Ofcourse this is a double edged sword since they might refuse sale of a sick animal and just ship it back or something....anyway good luck).

yeah, i went to the pomona show today and some of the people with them there had the same coloration so i guess its not a problem. and i doubt ill be getting them at the moment seeing as i just got 2 cresteds and another leo today...sheesh.
