Cross Locality breeding

CFoley Dec 13, 2003 09:47 PM

Cross locality breeding is obviously not a hybrid, being that in Morelia virids, they are all the same species...

How is the demand for such a thing? Do the majority of people tend to prefer known localities versus a crossed one (ex, biak x aru)?

I personally have a thing about keeping everything straight, and unless Im breeding for a certain color or pattern, I would keep localities with localities.

Id also imagine that CBB localities may not be exact being that they can go back for soo many generations, and alot of them arent traced.

Thanks
Chris

Is it more difficult? It doesnt strike me that it would be any harder than breeding same locality. However, I guess slight varations of climate per locality, but there have to be very similiar localities to cross that would make it just as easy, if there is difficulty.

Im not implying that breeding chondros is easy, being that Ive never done so, but Im really hoping that next year is my year for chondros.

Thanks
Chris

No, chondros are chondros.

also, it would be a good idea to get rid of the idea of "locality" when thinking of chondros. Very few people are working with locality documented animals in the US.

Hi Chris,
There are people who prefer locality animals and people who like "designer" chondros. Designer chondros being animals produced from adults of unknown or different localities. There's people that like both kinds too. Personally I prefer locality stuff, but there are definitely a lot of people who like the designer animals. Too me it's always been a bit odd that chondro keepers are one of the few herpers that have no qualms about mixing animals of different localities. Dart frog keepers for example, frown heavily upon people mixing the many tinctorius localities even though it is just one species. The whole locality documentation requirement thing is another chondro keeper anomaly...certain island localities are so obvious that when I hear people say that you can't call a snake a Biak because you don't have "documentation" I think to myself, just open your eyes and look at the snake..can't you see what it is? Anyways enough of my rant, I have no real problem with people working with designers if that's what they like. In fact the people I like to "hang" with at the morelia viridis chat are all designer keepers. Here's a couple links to people who work with locality animals:
