Spotted & Children's questions...

Tigergenesis Dec 14, 2003 07:55 AM

I've just finished reading 4 of the 5 pages of posts on this forum, checking out all the websites recommended in these posts and scoured the Internet until I became cross-eyed - but I still have some questions regarding these guys.

1) what is the minimum cage requirement for a single spotted or children's?

2) do these guys like to climb?

3) what percentage of humidity should the be kept at?

4) am I correct that they each get about 3 feet on average? is there much size difference between males and females?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would go by the adult sizes.....I have seen ones that are 4 ft and I have a pair of Children's that are only 18-24" and live in 12X12X15 tubs.

MINE love to. In fact they tend to come to the top rim of the tub, nab lunch and hang there and eat. Silly snakes.

I keep mine without humid hides and just a bowl of water and have fine sheds and good health.

My pair is very close in size....but for that the female is a pig and will get girth the male never does. But that is just my pair. I have seen bigger spotteds than childrens too.

I will start by saying that you should look harder at this forum and you will see that furthur down on this page I have already answered all your questions at least three times over, but for other people. For your benefit I will answer them again. The cage size for one or two spotteds should be at least a 20 gallon. Use basking lights, not under tank heaters, as pythons need to bask, unlike colobrids. Branches are required because spotted and childrens pythons climb. In the wild spotted and childrens pythons will climb up the side of cave walls to catch roosting bats. For the humidity, just use a large water bowl with a bark substrate to retain the humidity. Spotted pythons will reach from 3-4 feet and childrens will top off at 3 feet; females are sometimes larger in pythons. Spotted pythons and childrens pythons look almost identical as juveniles, but spotteds will retain their beautiful spotted coloration while childrens will lose their pattern and become a dull brown color.

Hope that helps!
Good luck.
