Eye Problem in veilds

herper1990 Dec 14, 2003 12:53 PM

Hi I was feeding my veiled chameleon today and i noticed that his eyes were closed and they almost seemed crusted up I don't think he can see because he dosent eat the crickets even when they pass his face. I tried to attach a pic but Im not sure if it worked. Thanks

Nick,

Heavily misting with warm water - or placing the cham in the "warm shower" will loosen crusty matter.

You will need to treat the eyes, most likely, with meds - so if you don't have the appropriate ointment and/or drops - its a vet visit for you.

I have the same problem and have not found anything that will work. My female still has them over her eyes, and she can’t eat so I have to feed and water her by hand every day. If you find out what kind of meds to use, please post.

Terramycin(oxytetracycline hydrochloride) is what I have for my male vieled. When I got my little boy he had a crusty eye and this is what the vet perscribed. He also perscribed baytril ti fight the infection from within. You can get both of the meds from 1800petmeds.com or one of those other online places. The terramycin is like $7 a tube, and I am unsure about the baytril. YOu dont need a perscription to buy either of these, but you may want to ask your vet about the dosage. The terramycin should be applied twice a day for a week. It may not look like it is cleared up, but a couple of days after you stop treatment, the eye will look as good as new. The baytril(liquid) should be used onece a day for the same week in a a small syringe(with a cathedir, SP?). You should use .05mL of baytril per 100 grams of chmeleon. You should mix a few mL of a sweet liquid(juice, gatorade, etc.) because baytril tastes horrible. YOu should keep you chameleon VERY well hydrated during antibiotic use because they can get very sick oreven die if not proerly hydrated during antibiotic use. Like I said before, you may want to check with your vet about the dosage. You can ask your vet about the dosage, but you can get the meds online for much cheaper. Hope this help. jrbl

They do not seem to have the right one. What I was reccommending was a oral liquid baytril. You can try one of the other online perscription places if you want. You could get it pretty cheap from your vet if you plan on going there. jrbl

I found the medicine you need to treat the eye problem in your chameleon. It is Terramycin. I found it at the bean farm. The link bellow should take you right there. I bought some for my chameleon already.
