Couple of ques. bout new leo

kavanaugh_j Dec 14, 2003 01:17 PM

I have my room in the basement, where i keep the leo, and I can keep it quite dark 24hrs a day (unless im in there doing something obviously)...Should I be doing this? Or should I turn the lights on for some period, and then off for the night hours?
Also a question about feeding...I got my leo on thursday, and hes had a few crickets everyday...I'm just wondering if it is better to just take out a few and leave them in the tank with him, just runnin around? Or what is the better way? Thanks in advance.

Its good to have a day night cycle for the leo. You can put a low wattage day bulb on their tank to simulate day if it is dark in your room 24/7. Also you shouldnt leave any uneaten crix in the tank for more then 30 mins because this can annoy the leo and they are also known to nip at the leo if not eaten. Hope this helps.

Ginny's right about the importance of a day/night cycle and about leaving crickets in the tank. You can pick up a timer at your local drugstore or home depot type place for around $10 or less, then you don't have to do it by hand and it will be consistant.

Mealworms are fine to leave in a dish for your leo, if you'd like them to have access all the time. Many people keep mealworms in there 24/7 and feed crickets when they can supervise and remove them later. Young leos especially seem to go for crickets because their movement provokes a prey response.

Good luck with your leo, good questions!
