spider gecko

crimsontears14 Dec 14, 2003 03:41 PM

hi everyone. I went to a reptile show on saturday and was given a spider gecko. It is extrememly skinny and looks dehydrated. So far I have set it up in a simple sanitary enclosure with a heat light, two hide boxes, and a small plastic plant. (and a top). it ate one cricket last night and im pretty sure it drank some of the water droplets off the side of the tank when I sprayed it this afternoon....
anyway my question is this: I have seen some basic care sheets for spider geckos, but does anyone have any advice for me? how to decorate the tank, sex the gecko, stimulate it to eat, etc? any and all help would be greatly appriciated.
regards,
anna

Spider Geckos are fun to keep. They are very active if given the right enviornment. The need lots of rocks to climb on right under a 60watt basking spot. Make sure lots of levels of basking spots are created with your rock formation. Slate works the best and you can make pieces really sturdy for rock formations
They like lots of light and it really HOT. Mist the gecko a little in the morning and a little at night. NOT MUCH! Just enough to give it a drink. Sexes are easy to tell. MAles have big buldges and are usually smaller than females. Good luck with it!

Hi, well, if your animal is sick, or well "not up to par", don't adorn your cage too heavily with rocks or anything yet. It is definitely a good idea to have a couple of pieces of slate though, to form a good basking spot. They do like it very hot. These geckos live in areas that used to be rivers in the wild. So put sand as the substrate with some good sized river rock. Because the animal is sick, and I don't know how much, but anyways, it's a good idea to pinch the back legs off of the crickets that you give it. That way they can't move as fast, and only give it a couple to start off with. I feed my adults four or five half inch crickets every other day. And of course calcium/vitamin dust the crickets each time you feed it. Let me know if you've got any more questions.
