Thinking of getting a RES, have some Qs...

shortydsm Dec 14, 2003 07:54 PM

My local reptile store is going out of business & they will be closed by Dec. 23 Anyway, they have 2 red-eared sliders in a 40(?) gallon tank full of water & have an island thing in the middle for them to bask on. I am not sure of their sexes either & they are about 6-9 inches each. They seem like friendly little guys w/cute personalities. The owner said I can have 1 or both of them for free if I want them, otherwise she will give them away to the pound b/c she does not want to ship them back to their original breeder b/c it's a "hassle." I am thinking of taking them in, however, I do not know anything about the care & keeping of this species. It seems like this type of turtle is getting up there in the "disposable pet" list, like iguanas & pythons?

If I got one or both, what should I use to keep them in? Do they have to have a terrarium with mostly water or what? Please point me in the right direction & give me some advice, and/or give me any links to websites that can help. Thanks for reading!

Sorry I am not qualified to answer. But if you do it, you will really enjoy them. I hope you get your answers.

They are aquatic turtles, they just need a small basking area so they can dry off periodically. You would need a huge tank for those two, generally you need a 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle, so you are looking at about a 150 gallon tank to properly house them. You would also need a heavy duty canister filter, as well as UVB and basking lights.

I can help you do a set-up that's not going to break the
bank. Can you e-mail me?
