The beardie I have been taking care of ....

dragonlady1954 Dec 14, 2003 08:41 PM

I have been taking care of a beardie for a friend who didn't know how to properly care for it. Anyway, When I got 'Sammy' she was 30 grams and 8 inches long, with a nipped tail. She was supposed to be between 6 months and 1 year old. She was very figity and didn't like to be held. Well that was October 6th. We weighed her today and she is 158 grams and 11 1/4 inches long!!! She will even let us hold her without her trying to get away! I have another male and female about the same size and I am thinking about introducing them before long. I would like to house the females together and move the male to his own cage. My male and female are about 4 months old, the male is 170 grams and the female 122 grams. I am going to wait a little longer and make certain everyone is totally healthy...no problems so far. I was worried about Sammy when I got her and I am just so proud of her for making such a comeback!!!

I would probably seperate that male and female pretty soon. The male may be fully capable to breed in the next few weeks if he isn't already. And a female that small should not be breed. Just my thoughts. It is not unheard of for people to have 4 month old beardies be breed. It works out sometimes but is very risky.

I agree completely and I have a cage set up to separate them very soon. I let my 1 year old male and 18 month old female breed earlier this year (my male and female are babies from that breeding) so I know what it takes out of the female. She had 5 clutches. I would never want to put a female too young or too small in that situation.

Wow! What an improvement. My friend's dragon isn't doing so well either, very small, and sluggish. What did you do differently for her dragon to help it regain its health?

I was fortunate that all that was wrong with this little girl was neglect. I just made sure her temps were accurate and started feeding her greens and crickets everyday along with her calcium and Vit d3 and a lot of TLC and she started gaining weight almost immediately!! Sharon
