Fruit Fly Medium.... Need help please!

Solomon Dec 14, 2003 09:39 PM

Hi there.

I can't get the fruit fly medium right. The last batch I made up lasted about a week before moulding over. What I used was instant potato flakes, pectin, and equal amounts boiled water with about 5 grains of yeast on top. This time I added more pectin and a 50/50 water to vinegar. Any help would be great!

Thanks.

I have not tried pectin in any of my recipies but you need some kind of sugar for the yeast to feed on. My recipe is one cup potato flakes, one tablespoon sugar, and a few grains yeast.

For the mold, go to the pet store and get a bottle of propolene blue (I think, I'm not sure on the name). The pet store will know what you're after, it's a product used in fish aquriums to prevent or cure fungus. Put about one drop of that in two cups of water and use that to hydrate the potato flakes, that will stop the fungus.
