New ball.......just found a mite....what to do first?

boastud Dec 14, 2003 11:26 PM

My new ball i searched her over good, but noticed a mite (i think it was really small and black moving around) in her water bowl. She is in a sweaterbox with a water bowl and aspen bedding. I assume i should put her on news paper. What next should i do to get rid of them? Does that black knight work? Help!

i found a mite a little while ago, I used Black Knight and haven't seen a mite since (mind you, i only I saw one to begin with). Either pro exotics or PG exotics has a real good section on their web site on how to disinfect you set-up and BP. I got my can for like 18.50 shipped off of the classifieds on this site. As for right now you can soak your sanke and that should kill some that might be on it.

If you find one mite, I would take a proactive approach and assume that all of your other snakes have them. Mites can spread rapidly from cage to cage. I've had them spread to snakes that I have in other rooms, across several feet of carpet, very rapidly. I had great success using provent-a-mite. The good thing about provent-a-mite is that you don't have to change out your substrate, and it can last for a month.

I don't have experience with black knight, but apparently it is very safe for your snake, as well as very effective. Immediate relief was given to my snake by soaking it in 95 degree F water with a couple of drops of liquid soap mixed in.

I have used Black Knight, it is wonderful stuff. A quick spray in the cage (remove the snake and any standing water) and mites are a thing of the past. Spray the cage every few weeks to ensure they never come back.
