Is it possible to maintain a mealworm colony in just one container?

xelda Dec 15, 2003 12:19 AM

I'm planning to switch off of mealworms, so I want to cut down on the mealworm maintenance. I don't want to keep on separating the beetles and pupae. Right now I've got mealworms in all the stages, and I've already completed one cycle. Could I just throw them all into one container, and how big should it be?

You don't have to seperate the stages.. unlike with Zoophobas...You can maintain numbers in one container if you like... I prefer rack systems because it makes my life simpler by seperating what mealies I do have so they're easier to find than in a big tub...

I've been separating the pupae because they have a tendency to get eaten. (yuck)

But yes, my other question has to do with superworms. I'm leaving next month, and I'll be in China for 4.5 months. I figure 5000 will be enough to last my juveniles, but I'll stock 6000 just in case. I was going to feed the medium-sized ones, but should I buy a certain portion of small superworms, so that by the time they're needed, they'll have grown to medium? Or does it take long for the mediums to reach full size?

I'm not familiar with superworm growth rates at all, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Depending on the size of your juvies...they may be able to take full size supers.. My 6 and 7 month old juvies took them easy.. but if you want to go with the idea... you might want to stock half of them in smalls... though once Supers get to a certain size.. their growth stops to where it takes them a month just to reach the next size... I've just taken to breeding the suckers because it isn't that much harder than mealworms save for the pupation thing.
