Veiled Breeding Attempt

Adam_17 Dec 15, 2003 03:07 AM

Hey everyone, this is one of my first times on this website and i have thoroughly enjoyed it!!! I love the photos! I have a quick question for all of you chameleon keepers out there: I have a female veiled that is about 9 1/2 months old that I recently tried to breed with a male that is about 6 months old (They are pretty close in size but the female is a little bit larger). This was also the first time that either of the 2 chameleons have been bred. The female had shown the coloration signs that she was receptive for breeding. When the male was introduced to the females habitat, he immediatley mounted her and it looked as if a successful breeding was going to occur; however the male never seemed to get his body propperly positioned for conception to occur. He made several attemps over the next hour or so but never was able to get the job done. Eventually they seemed to lose interest, so I took the male out and tried again a few days later. This time, the same thing occurred but after about an hour and a half the female began to gape and turn face to face w/ the male every time he attempted to come towards her so he was unable to mount her, and so again I separated them. My question is that is this behavior normal for first time breeders? should I continue to attempt the breeding? or is it possible that they are not compatible? I am open to any suggestions or comments that you think might help the successful breeding of these 2 chameleons. Thanks a lot, and have a great day.

I'm almost positive that no copulation occured. I figured that 2 sexual mature veileds would have no problem breeding, apparently they did not officially copulate for one reason or another. I'm perplexed.

Well, my pair didnt breed the first time either.. they chased each other for a long time but nothing happened... I just think that you have to give it about 2-3 days between tries... but dont stop trying because the problem it is only in their moods..

Yeah you just gotta keep on trying. Once they breed once or twice it's easier from then on out. The female probably just got frusturated with him "bugging" her and that's why she gaped at him. Keep trying with a few days inbetween each time. My veileds were the hardest chameleons I have to get to breed. The male kept attacking her over and over and over and by the time it worked out I had been trying for probably 3 months. Your male is still slightly young to breed and maybe he's just not quite ready yet. Her size may make him hesitant also. He'll catch up in size soon though.

Hey Adam,
And welcome! I don't know how everyone else does it, but I always put my females in the males cage. Next attempt, try leaving him in his own cage & introduce her to him. If the guy is on bottom, put her near the top. Guy on top, place her near the bottom.
One more thing, it is possible that she is already gravid with infertiles. Probably not, but possible. Anyway, keep trying & GOOD LUCK!
