adding new blood to my colonies...

sartori Dec 15, 2003 04:44 AM

Most of the rats i have as breeders all decend from my orignal 30 rats i purchased from a local breeder over 3 years ago.. so i figured it was time to go ahead and add some new blood to the colony.

4.12 Sprague Dawley lab stock animals should do the trick.. this line of animals throws between 18-20 pinks per litter

Seattle has been having brutally cold nights, so i brought the new guys inside for a few days until the temps stablize alittle more, then out they go with the rest.

are they an albino dark eyed rat? they look like they have a pink eye? should do wonders for your colony. please explaing for all us forum lurkers how you plan to introduce these to your colony? for example, are you going to cull 4.12 of you slower producers and replace with the new blood. are you simply going to keep all the breeders you have and add these. etc...
thanks chris

there are a few lab strains that are "widely known" for their production...

ICR
sprague dawley

my plan is to keep 2.6 pure lab stock.. and mix the other 2.6 into the colony with some other weaned "fancy" rats..

so a tub would consist of say:

1.0 sprague dawley
0.2 fancy
0.1 sprague dawley

and so on.. this gives me the ability to mix the lab blood into my MUT rats and stregnthen their genes alittle

but i will be keeping some PURE lab animals.. just cuz they produce good
