Humidity tips

maizeysdad Dec 15, 2003 07:19 AM

Hi folks,

I can't get the humidity in my 29 gallon, long tank above 40% with a big water bowl, a cover over half of the screen top, and the basking light hitting part of the water bowl. Any suggestions?

Thanks

aspen bedding with cypress mulch. I fell on this technique about 15 years ago, and it works great. Do you have a screen top? If so try covering 1/2 to 3/4 of it with a piece of plywood or just make a new top with part screen for venilation.
Hope that helps.

I use the same 29 long setup and was having the same problems.

What I've done were:

I used to mist everday but that raised the humidity a lot for a short period of time so...

I have a piece of cardboard 20" Long covering about 2/3 of the top. I have a 12" diameter waterbowl in the middle of the enclosure and that lets the humditity hold at 40% minimum. I then purchased the Exoterra SMALL waterfall and put it in the cold side of the enclosure and it has effectively raised average relative humidity to 60%.

The waterfall does have some vibration/ambient noises, but my snakes seem to love it. They climb on it daily and occasionally hide next to it. Many people will tell you they didn't like it, but I think mine is great. It also adds a lot to the 'naturalistic' look of my tank setup.

Good luck.

The simplest solution to your humidity problem is to give your snake a humid hide. This is simply a hide like the other two he hopefully has, but this one has damp substrate in it. Your snake will use it as he needs to, usually during a shed cycle. If you have a humid hide, and a water dish big enough for him to soak in, you shouldn't need to worry about the humidity in the rest of the tank.

I only worry about humidity when my bps are about to shed. Once they go blue I place damp paper towels in their hide, being sure to change these out every day until they shed. Haven't had a problem with a shed since I've started with this method.
