Lighting Distance

thelord Dec 15, 2003 09:45 AM

Hi,
I currently have a 36 inch Reptisun 5.0 UV light 16 inches off the ground from my baby yellow foot. Does anyone know the max. distance a UV light can be from the tort in order for the tort to absorb the UV? Is 16 inches or greater ok or does it need to be closer to him?
Thank you,Steve

The minimum effective distiance for those tubes is usually recorded as 8 to 10 inches for a new bulb... less than that for a used bulb.
I'd suggest that you look into a self ballasted mercury vapor lamp. There are now a number of manufacturers out there.

I bought a mercury bulb for my greeks and they hated it. Spent most of their time hiding from it.

I noticed an increase in feeding and activity when I switched to a mercury vapor lamp, very similar to behavior when outside in natural light. It could be that the brightness of the light compared to a fluorescent was disturbing to your Greeks because they weren't used to it (?).
