Coil vs Reptisun?

FisherCham20 Dec 15, 2003 11:15 AM

Right now I have an ESU Super UV Coil Lamp for Bender. I see that most of you seem to have the Reptisun 5.0. I want to make sure he's getting the right amount of UVB. He has a basking light that's full spectrum also. The Coil Lamp says that it outputs 3% UVB and 15% UVA. Is that enough or should I just switch to the Reptisun? Thanks!

Your UV coil lamp would be sufficient for the time being. Just make sure you supplement calcium with D3 a little more than what you would supplement a chameleon that is exposed to a reptisun. But i recommend you change the bulb promptly at about 6 months. With reptisun you could go to about 8 months...or even strecth a little to a year, but since the UV coil lamp only produce significanztly less UVB, it only makes sense to creplace a new one a little earlier.

The reptisun is a sure shot. Its the bulb of choice for chameleons. I would'nt take chances with any other bulbs, especially with chameleons. Just make sure the light is w/in 12 inches of the animal.

Thanks for the input! I'll add it to my Christmas list.

I use the REPTI-GLO 8.0 bulbs. They are anywhere from $5.00 to $15.00 cheaper than the Repti-Suns and provide the necessary UVB requirements (at least, they claim they do and no one had proven them wrong yet).

I find that the REPTI-GLO bulbs provide more ambient light than the repti-sun bulbs as well.
