First Uro's

AzLunchbox Dec 15, 2003 12:50 PM

Hey everyone....I'm Matt
I just ordered my first ever Uromastyx.
A Pair of Yellow Nigerian Uromastyx......er......i guess they're also called Saharan Uromastyx according to some of the websites that i've seen.
But i only found one thing that had a quick note on them as far as care goes.....which said unlike others these ones should have a water bowl in their cage. Is this true?
also besides that all i could find is General Uromastyx care.
So is there anything else i should know? or any inks to care sheets i may have not seen yet?

Also is it true that they don't eat insects much?
I already got the bird seed.....and have veggies for my bearded dragon already. And Crickets, Mealworms, and wax worms......so it'd help if they'd eat any of that......but if they need to stick to the veggies and seed that is understandable.......
should i use the same supplement i use for my bearded dragon? I forget which kind it is since i took it all out of it's original annoying container.....but i know it doesn't have any D3 since they get that from the UV light......anyways yeah.

thanks for any help.

-Matt-

Hi and congratulations on your new additions
For uro care sheets, have you visited the Deer Fern Farms website yet? If not, the address is www.deerfernfarms.com, the care sheets are for uros in general but some parts of the website subdivide each type of uro species.
As for your uros' diet, greens such as dandelion, endive, escarole, and mustard greens are good choices. Kale and collard greens can be fed but to a lesser extent (they have more calcium-binding agents in them). Insects can be fed but keep it minimal in the diet (eg. 2-3 crickets every 1-2 weeks). There are some people in the forum who feed their uros Bearded Dragons pellets but are careful not to feed them too much (there's a lot of protein in those pellets and high protein is not good for uros). I use juvenile iguana pellets. It is recommended that uros be given calcium supplements WITH vitamin D3 even though they are exposed to UV light. A bulb will never match the UV output of good old natural unfiltered sunlight so extra vitamin D3 helps to stave off MBD (metabolic bone disease).

I hope this helps you out
Welcome to the wonderful world of uros

Hey, Matt-
I have two Saharans and do NOT keep a water bowl in the cage. It's just a mess, usually, plus I have enough trouble keeping the humidity down. I DO give them a soak in about 1/2" of very warm water once every couple of weeks to give them a chance to drink if they want. Both have on occasion, but usually do not. If you soak them, be sure to dry them thoroughly before returning them to the tank!
Welcome!
