You can get standard single thickness plate glass (~1/8"
at salvage yards from old storm windows for pretty cheap . . . they might even give some things away. I don't think I'd use this as a free standing wall of a terrarium, but I'd recommend using a design like they have at this link: http://www.garf.org/140.gallon.html
Of course, I'd use glass on the sides as well, but making a wooden frame makes things a lot easier to construct without having to be quite so exact. You can also make a front-opening version pretty easily if you have a plywood frame. All you need to do is waterproof it pretty well (I recommend epoxy paint instead of fiberglass resin).
Plexiglass is nice and light, but scratches easily and is more expensive to get your hands on. Just buy yourself a glass cutter at any hardware store for under $10 and make your way to your nearest salvage yard or glass recycling center.
