(heating)...Decisions, decisions

jwr0201 Dec 15, 2003 09:09 PM

Help me decide, please. I have an UTH which I wish to use only during the night. It gets the warm end to 80 deg. For days, I want to use either a ceramic heat emitter or an infra-red heat lamp (black or red bulb). Which is likely to be better. My leos home is a 20 long tank. I'm leaning towards a 60watt red bulb. Also, is the heat output of the black infra-red light's output the same as the red? Thanks for helping! RR

If your UTH only gets up to 80 on the warm end, why not just leave it on all the time and add a lamp on the warm side during the day? you can easily gain 5-10 degrees with a (relatively) low wattage regular light bulb during the day, and that would add nicely to your 80 base temp. By using a light, it would also help establish a consistent day/night schedule for your leo. Just plug the light into a timer. ($5-10 at a hardware store).
Besides that, regular light bulbs are cheap compared to ceramic or infrared bulbs and you can easily play around with different wattages for minimal $ if you don't guess the right wattage the first time.

I don't know the answer to your other question though.
