Help! New collared owner... I think the little guy has worms!

dizwendy Jun 03, 2003 09:54 AM

We just got a collared lizard on Sunday. This morning he pooped for the first time, and I noticed he has worms. I'm not sure what kind they are, but they're small white, and round, almost the size and shape of grains of rice. First, does anyone know what they are? Can they be treated at home or do I need to take him to a vet?

What should I do about getting some sort of compensation from the pet store? Shoudl I expect compensation at all? Yes, I bought him from a pet store, but it's an individual that breeds them himself and I went in and checked the store on several occasions and it always looked very clean, the animals looked well cared for, and all he does is breed reptiles. Should I ask for him to pay for the treatment? Should I ask for my money back? I don't really want to get rid of this one as we've already become attached to him.

Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated!

Wendy

Hi,
I'm not sure if there is anything you can do as far as getting compensated, it's a natural thing, worms, I think he should have treated him BEFORE selling him BUT>>> unless he specifically said he did or he garenteed they were worm free, I don't see the use of creating a big stink, especially since you say you already like the lizard !
Alot of people, especially on the bearded Dragon forum, including myself have used a product called ParaZap with alot of success, just type in Parazap in your search and read about it and make up your mind, to try and treat yourself OR take to vet and have it done, just my suggestion, hope it all goes well ! :0) Eve

Thanks! You have reassured me that it isn't that big a deal. I was able to get in touch with the owner and I took him in to the pet shop this afternoon and they treated him for me. They seemed very concerned and asked me to call back in a week if I was still seeing any live worms. He seems very well adjusted otherwise.

Great, yeah, that was nice, they will usually do it if you ask, most people in this are pretty cool about keeping the lizards healthy !!! :0) glad it worked out, soon he will begin to eat real well too, and they gain weight better after getting rid of worms, they can make them inactive, and well , just a good thing to get rid of them, good job, post a pic of the new baby !! LOL Eve

Thanks again! He's already eating really well. I hate to think what he'll be eating when he gets rid of those worms! LOL!

Here's a pic of the new guy. It's not the best, but it will do for now.
