A recent news article described a town out west where vermiculite is mined that is basiclly contaminated with asbestos. Both minerals are naturally found in nature (mica and asbestos) and vermiculite may very well contain asbestos. As with silica (sand) and other dust the best way to contain the powder is to only work with the substance in a moist condition or wear a mask.
