Collecting eggs before they go bad....

KofSeattle Dec 16, 2003 08:32 AM

Hello,

I have a 1.2 group of Ciliatus that have recently started laying eggs. Unfortunately I only find them after they have been sitting for several days and have yet to find any suitable for the incubator. They are just laying them in the substrate which is bark mulch and the eggs dry out quickly. Does anyone have a trick for finding these eggs easily and/or ensuring where they lay them? Any help appreciated

I supply a deli cup with moist peatmoss. It easier to find the eggs. I also use paper towel for the bottom of the cage. All my geckos get this kind of lay box. They all seem to like the peatmoss.

Thanks,

I had the same problem the first time I kept cresteds (About 4 years ago). I had live plants in a soil mix substrate. I probably got 20 eggs out of 1.2, and only hatched one single baby. I got soooooo fed up I sold that trio, and just kept a single crested I had gotten the year prior. I know am back up to 1.3.2 (Babies were just hatched on Thanksgiving), and also use paper towel as a substrate. I use vermiculite instead of peat moss in the lay box. If you truly want to find eggs easier, make your setup simpler!

I have a bare bottom (or should I say the enclosure has a bare bottom) in the enclosure and have a small tupperware container filled with a coconut husk chunk material (can't remember what it's called, but is available at PetSmart) that I keep moistened at all times. The females have never laid eggs anywhere but in this container.
