RI Question Please Help

AJD Dec 16, 2003 10:40 AM

So far in my 11 years working with herps I have not encountered a Respiratory infection. I now got a baby burm that is 36" long. She is active when I have her out and at night. She is getting fed every 5 days. The problem is when I have her out she will have little puffs of air that sounds like a hiss but is very short. It only happens every once and a while but I am concerned do to my inexperience with RI. What does everyone think? Is there any way I can take precautions? My husbandry is almost sterile. I keep the right temps with a gradient. SO what could I do differently?

Thank you

AJ

Hi AJ, It sounds to me like it might just be a very normal precautionary defensive mechanism that young burms sometimes employ. This based on what I can discern from the information given in your post. You don't mention any fluid, mucus or gurgling and I have certainly seen young burms act "huffy", as I call it, frequently. Do these brief bursts of air occur mostly when you move suddenly or disturb her in any way? Does she seem a bit tense? If so it may indicate that she is just a bit nervous and is just trying to keep possible "danger" at bay.

She does not have any real signs of RI. She seems very comfortable when she is out there is no jerking of her body movements or tensing of her body. That is why I am concerned.

Thank you
