San Jose Foothills and/or Mt.Hamilton...anything up there?

Zach_MexMilk Jun 03, 2003 10:20 AM

Hello Herpers,

I have been searching around for a good place to go herping near San Francisco. I was searching on Yahoo maps and found a map of SJ. They had 2 places that were interesting, the East Foothills and Mt.Hamilton. Is there anything up there? Thanks-Zach

Gopher snakes, western rattlesnakes, fence lizards, skinks, etc.
One of the best herping spots is out along Coral Hollow road that runs between Tracy and Livermore.

If you have any more questions, you can email me. I just checked this forum as a fluke!

Mt. Hamilton has never let me down. We found a few rattlers last weekend, and a HUGE gopher snake a few weeks back. If you dont find any snakes, you won't be dissapointed by the beautiful scenery.

Anything you could hope to find in the bay area will be found in the Mt. Hamilton/Alum Rock Park area, even zonata if you know where to look.
A long stretch like Mt. Hamilton Rd. is great for night driving, and, like the previous poster noted, the view is terrific..
Good luck

Just saw a 3 ft plus Calif. Kingsnake crawling across the road at dusk recently on Mt. Hamilton Rd. in a grassy area. Nice specimen. Gave me a very gentle nip when I picked it up off the ground. I had to let it go quickly because cars were stopped behind me. The scenery is nice, but don't look while you are driving. The road is narrow....
