Snakes and dogs...

Tigergenesis Dec 16, 2003 01:31 PM

I'm considering getting several Boaphile cages which I plan to stack on the floor w/o a pedestal. I'm wondering if my dog peering into the cages that are at her eye level would be too stressful for the snakes I plan to keep? She could currently care less about the snakes I have now. She has seen them each once when I had them out, she barked a bit and then went on about her business. I no longer let her see them when I have them out (usually take them out when she's asleep or not home). Their cages are above her eye level, but she never seems interested in standing up on their cages to see them. I have a feeling that she may be interested to see what's moving around in the cages at first, but will get over it quick. However, I can't be sure and I wonder if any stress may be caused to the snakes?

I suppose snakes would see dogs as a threat. I have 4 snakes and my cats are constantly on top of their tanks. I have to yell at them to get them off. It doesn't seem to bother my 2 corns, 1 milk and a jungle carpet python. I suppose they can feel the vibration of the cats jumping on and off their enclosures but it doesn't seem to harm them any. They still eat and shed like snakes do. This is just my experience :0)

My dog doesn't really stare at my snakes. I don't think it would be a big problem as long as the snakes feel they have somewhere to hide. My dog is, however, excellent at finding wayward sand boas.

You may not be very happy with the bottom cage directly on the floor. I've tried it, and the bottom cage is always significantly colder than the next cage up. Going down on hands and knees to get a snake out of that bottom cage or to clean the cage gets old, fast. Now I generally knock together some sort of low table about 18 inches high to stack cages on. Good luck.

Yeah, got to thinking about it and I've decided to go with an 11.5 inch pedestal. From the bottom cage up I hope to house: a Mandarin Ratsnake, Spotted Python, Ball Python and a smaller cage on top with a Rough Scaled Sand Boa. The pedestal helps make it not too low or too high - its just right. I got to thinking about it and realized just what you said about being on my hands and knees...

Thanks!

My mandarins are actually about a foot off the ground. It's good for them temperature wise, but getting them out of the cage is always an adventure.

My cat really couldn't care less about my snakes. He took interest in a Bearded Dragon that I kept for a while but the facination soon wore off. As far as dogs go, I think that a new scent would be the most interesting to him/her. When ever we bring something new into our house, the cat walks over to it and gives it a good once over/sniff and is done with it. In my experience, dogs have been the same way. I would still be carefull though. Since snakes don't emit any odor I don't think that it will be a really big problem. Good luck!

My dog gets really jealous when my snake sleeps on the couch next to me while i watch television and gives me a sad and angry look.
