Other brands of insulating foam safe?

bostonfroggr Dec 16, 2003 02:00 PM

Has anyone used the other brands of insulating foam other than Great Stuff for their tanks? Home depot has ones from Daptek and Hilt, I believe. They're nice in the fact that u don't have to use all of the can at once. They're basically the same stuff, right?

I tried a latex foam. Its not the same stuff and it sucked. It said it cured in 24 to 48 hours, well three days went by and it still hadn't cured. When it finaly did it was soft and began to dissolve when it got wet.

I'd stick with great stuff.

Lowes has the low expansion Great Stuff for $4.25 a can. I went in last week to pick up a can and saw that they have a bonus twin pack for $4.95. The extra can really makes up for the lower expansion as I have had great results with it. I wouldn't trust using any other brand as Great Stuff has been acclaimed by alot of people who have used it in ther vivs.

Sorry, this it kind of off topic. I was talking to somebody about my plans to use the concrete bonding background mix over the expanding foam and they brought up a good point that I had not considered. Over time the foam will begin to shrink, however the solid background mix will not. This will lead to eventual cracking and flaking of the background mix away from the foam. Is there something I am missing, or is this a possible problem using this background technique?

Bryan,

I think that is a very good point, but it might take 5-10 years (or more) for the foam to shrink any appreciable level. I personally have had good luck using the black silicone to adhere substrate to. That should provide the flexibility to stay adhered to the foam even if it shrinks.

I did small patches by simply drizzling the silicone over the background in rather generous quantities, then taking a hadful of my substrate mix and just pushing it down onto the foa and silicone. If you wiggle it around a bit, the silicone gets spread around, and it all stuck well for me. I used a mix of the coco husk chips (small and medium sized), activated charcoal, and some sphagnum moss.
