OT.....False Uromastyx (Xenogama batillitera)

BigFil Dec 16, 2003 02:21 PM

I was wondering if anyone in this forum had any experience with False Uro's that they could share. I saw one for sale at the East Bay Vivarium this weekend and was really intrigued by this lizard. Unfortunately their is not much info on the internet that I was able to locate.

I have some xenagama taylori, of which there is about the same amount of info as the batilifera. I believe they have the same husbandry, just batilifera get a little bit bigger.

What are they like when comparing them to a BD (the only herp I have)? Are they very active? Do they have pretty much the same sleeping patterns? Personality?

I'm trying to get a better sense on whether or not this is the next herp for me and what peoples experience with them has been. I actually checked out the site that was suggested by Tom & Jackie and another one but they seem to conflict in some ways. One says they are very much like BD's and the other says they are not.

Thanks.

I suppose it would depend on what you have to relate to. They are like dragons in that they are insectivores, but they are much more active. They seem to prefer flying insects to crawling ones. They dig all the time. They are constantly scratching the sand. They are rather small so I don't hold them very often, but when I do, they never try to bite or run away or anything. I noticed when petting the back of my females head, they do this funny thing where they open their mouth and stick out their tongue. They are definately fun to watch. Their movements are very quick. They remind me more of my uros than of my beardies as far as their actions. I have only had them for not quite a month but had been eyeing them some for about a year and I am very happy I have them.

Thanks! Did you get yours from a breeder? The one at the EBV was $100 and I think I may swoop him up after Xmas if he's still there. How big is your enclosure and do you see any problems housing them in a 20L? I would probably keep just one

The taylori are about 1/2 the size of the batiliferaand I have them in a 30x12x12. I actually got them in a trade. They are imports and doing quite well. I think the one female may be gravid....either that or she way over eats LOL I know a couple different breeder/dealers that have been working with them. You can email me if you would like more details.
