Heat from compact fluorescent

orthopode Jun 03, 2003 10:40 AM

Hi,
Is there any risk that the heat from a compact fluorescent tube would crack the glass covering the top of a terrarium (if kept at an inch from the glass? If yes, what distance do you keep them from the glass?

I have compacts on only one tank, and I elevate the two fixtures with 2 layers of egg crate: a) to let some of the heat escape and b) to spread the light out more evenly. These fixtures aren't specifically made for aquarium/vivarium use, they are actually outdoor security lights that put out the same light as hobby specific lighting that are 3 times the cost, so I have to be a bit creative in utilizing them.

I have compacts on all of my tanks ranging from 96watts to 13 watts. The only problem I've found with putting the light directly on the glass canopy is heat build up in the tank. I raise my lights to obtain the desired temp in the tank. My 96 watt is about 5 inches, 55 watt is about three and my dual 13's are about an 1 1/2 inches.

While I'm thinking of it, I just wanted to tell you that you have some of the best looking tanks I've ever seen.

Are you measuring from the bulb or from the bottom edge of the enclosure?

I measured from the bottom of the enclosure but it isn't exact. I just raised them about an 1" at a time until I hit about 78 degrees in the middle of the tank with normal room tempature. This varies on warmer days an when it gets to hot, I have a fan blow across the lights. On really hot days before I turn on the ac, I shut the lights down.
