HELP! !! ADVICE NEEDED BADLY RE. MY 3 YR. OLD MALI'S NOT SHEDDING!

paulvespole Dec 16, 2003 11:23 PM

My Male and Female Mali's Have'nt shed in months. The other problem is that usually they don't poop for Weeks @ a time.
Soaking them usually helps but I'm afraid of tailrot. I really try my best with them as I'm not a newcomer to this. I'm home every day and give them the care and Love as I would expect.
My guess is dehydration even though the Male usually eats his greens, and even though the Female doesn't she goes more often than the male. Who could figure?
I will greatly appreciate any input.
THANK YOU.

Give them a soak with enough water that they can drink some too. Warm water.

As far as shedding goes, if yours have reached adult size (which they should after 3 years) then I wouldn't worry about it. Our adult male mali probably only sheds a few times a year, if that.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT! I was getting ready to take them to the vet. I have been soaking them for constipation as well. I'm
not sure how hot to make the water and whether or not to add the
salt should they decide to drink? Also concerned with giving them tail rot. Marsha actually dunked her head under but Marty isn't so crazy about the soaking.

Sounds to me like you need to raise your temperatures. A healthy, thriving uromastyx that is not brumating will poo every day. Remember to blast up that basking spot to keep the basking spot at 130 degrees and make sure your ambient temperature on the "cool side" of the tank is at least 80 degrees. On the same note, if they are not eating much and not digesting much they aren't going to grow and will not shed.

To Peter,Thank You for your input,I have them in seperate 30 gal long fish tanks Marty is very teritorial. Marsha is sweethart.Marty is ok when they are out of the tanks.Marsha seems
to be showing signs of wanting to mate as she's not so afraid of
him ie she nudges him with her nose and rolls over on her back flailing her arms which i find very funny and Marty bobs his head
which i thought meant aggression but read was sign of mating.I
really dont want them to for many reasons. I'm using the esu combo hoods with 2 100 watt t-rex active uv heat bulbs. Like you
say they can't seem to get enough heat. I've spoiled them by taking them out every day so it seems they are more concerned with coming out than anything else. Regards,Paulie V.

I can't find the reference but I believe turning on their backs is a "I don't want to mate" sign. (can anyone confirm) You may want to block their view of each other, it could calm them down.

Yes, Peter ....you are correct. My very small baby female used to do this whenever I would pet her in the cage. Super cute, but it's a submissive act. Not a great thing, breeding season is in the spring, not in the winter. This could easily be territorial warnings as well....seeing as it's not breeding time.

Peter....I give you my condolences in regards to Pebbles....
