Cypress & Aspen - what's the diff?

Tigergenesis Dec 17, 2003 05:43 AM

Is one better than the other for high humidity snakes? low humidity snakes?

Are they really the same or do they have different advantages/disadvantages?

My personal preference is Cypress. That is because Cypress is generally larger pieces (if you sort of sift the small pieces out) and is more difficult for a snake to accidentally ingest. Also, it's easier to spot-clean for me and does not seem to hold the ammonia smell as bad as Aspen. But the cages I use shavings in at all are large cages and I can use big Rubbermaid tubs to put the shavings (Cypress mulch)in, with newspaper on the floor of the cage underneath the tub. They sort of serve as a big open-topped hiding box for the snakes and make it much easier for me to clean/replace the Cypress mulch.

Cypress does a lot better when wet, but both do equally well when dry. Cypress absorbs water and aspen doesn't. Aspen is a bit more fun to burrow in, though.
