Eye Caps- please help

karosenberg Dec 17, 2003 08:44 AM

What is the best way to remove eyecaps? My lizard can't seem to shed his every month. I have brought him in to the vet four times already- $35 a pop. I will continue to do so if there is not another way to remove them. Does this mean his eyelids aren't formed right? Why does this happen every time he sheds? Also, he keeps his eyes closed 85% of the time- because he has eyecaps remaining I suppose...

Have you tried using a moist Q-tip? If the skin is really stuck, you might have to hold the q-tip on each eye for a few minutes to moisten it first, then gently rub to remove the skin. Some have said you can use oil instead of water to remove dead skin, but I wouldn't chance it near the eyes. Some also use tweezers to try to pull dead skin off, but again, I wouldn't risk using tweezers so close to their eyes. (But then again, I'm a klutz.)

Just curious, what has the vet done?

the vet took a tiny cotton swab (about the size of a bead) and swabbed his eyes out- the long strings of dead skin pulled out with it.

Leopard geckos don't have eye caps like snakes do.
If you don't have a humid hide in there, you might want to gear one up for it.
A butter dish with a hole in the lid, some paper towel or vermiculite inside, spray it now and then.
Pop that bad boy on the warm side and you're all set
w00t w00t!

good luck! I hope this saves you some money

He has the ultimate Leo setup. He has three dry hides and a huge moist hide-which he loves. He is in a 24x24x8 cage with repticarpet, right temps, etc. He has two females- I have yet to see them breed- although I think I have a gravid female...
