the one atop this page looks just like the one i'm trying to identify. i found a couple of these by a creek the other day, thought they might be baby copperheads, but now i'm pretty sure they were baby waters. any pics! thank u! -k

If it looks like the one on the top of the page, chances are they are Northern Water Snakes, Nerodia sipedon. Where are you located? Andy

Hello, This is a brown water snake, juvenile, about a year old. This species keeps it's colour and pattern throughout adulthood.
Michael

This is also a "brown" (if not the same one) showing the distinctly raised/forward eyes of taxispilota. The picture is very dark however the preceding photo is a bit more honest regarding the light brown background and clear square blotches on the back. Important is that the belly is white with black CHECKERING along with the dark brown squares on the back.

a hatchling. it was barely longer than the length of my hand. but now i am fairly certain that this snake WAS a banded water snake. thanks
i appreciate your help!
I sort of doubt it was a banded up in Kentucky. My guide puts broadbands possibly in VERY extreme western kentucky. But bandeds...I doubt that they are there at all. Andy
