rainbow boa with an eye infection

georgiamouton Dec 17, 2003 01:44 PM

so my favorite snake, annabelle, got sick recently with a respiratory infection. we changed her husbandry (put her in a cage with green moss, misted daily, lots of humidity, and a red lamp for heat 24/7, white lamp during the day to keep her on a day/night cycle -- approx 12 hrs apiece.) but she didn't get all the way better so we brought her to the vet and she got a shot of baytril. she's doing much better now, except i examined her the other day, and both of her eyes were bulging. a day after that, they both filled with pus. these are NOT retained spectacles, as i had originally thought. a few days later, one eye drained on its own, though is still bulging. the other eye is still filled with pus. i have a vet appointment in 2 days, but i'm curious as to what could be wrong. has anyone ever had this problem before???

I had a gecko with a similar problem. Periocular sinusitis is what they called it. The vet gave me eyedrops and an antibiotic. Since you can't put eyedrops on a snake and she's already on an antibiotic, hopefuly she'll get better soon. Keep that humidity up!

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

The eye situation probably indicates a systemic problem (hence BOTH eyes affected)Would definitely continue systemic antibiotic for 10-21 days. Good Luck.
