Upper RI versus pheumonia

kellywood23 Dec 17, 2003 03:29 PM

I was wondering if any one can tell me the difference in symptoms between an URI and Pheumonia?

i'm by no means an expert, but from what my vet said when my redfoot had an uri, the illness and symptoms of pneumonia are usually more severe than an uri. also, on an x-ray, an uri is pretty much confined to (as per its name) the upper respiratory bit, while pneumonia infects the lower respiratory tract as well and thus requires more aggressive treatment.

It would be difficult to pinpoint a difference in symptoms except, as has been said, pneumonia is more severe. Sometimes you will see bubbles from the nose and increased difficulty with breathing (outstretched neck, gulping air). The only way to diagnose pneumonia is by x-ray. Also pneumonia will more often cause more secondary symptoms like inappetance and lethargy.
