Iguanas growing to cage size?

setmax7 Jun 03, 2003 12:42 PM

I heard somewhere that the iguanas will grow according to their environment, meaning that if they are in a smaller cage and stay in that cage they will not grow big to suit their environment. I don't know if this is true or not. Any validity in this statement? THanks

An iguana kept in too small of an enclosure may become stunted, but only because it would be an unhealthy animal, unable to regulate heat properly, digest properly, and ultimately lead a shortened painful life!

For the sake of any animal, proper housing is crucial.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a bad idea then. I wouldn't want an unhealthy animal. Are there any lizards like iguanas that don't get quite as big? I don't have the space to get a 6 foot lizard in my appartment, but i really like iguanas. SO is there anything like them that you know of that doesn't get as big? Thanks.

Water dragons are green and cute. They might fit the bill.
You could also try the ever popular bearded dragon.

If you go back to the main page, there's also a picture of a bearded dragon. If I hadn't found Bud, I would have gotten a beardie- they're so sweet and impressive looking! Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your replies, i'll look out for those other ones. Thanks again.

Is that water dragons require almost as large of an enclosure as an ig. (they like to nose rub!) They are wonderful looking though.

Bearded dragons, Blue tongued skinks (my fav), ackies, desert igs, uromastyx, are all great pet lizards that attain a respectable, but not prohibative size.

There are a bunch of geckos that are a lot of fun too. And if you're rich, Leach's giant gecko gets to be a respectable size. (hatchlings are $350-400, adult size, 12-14 inches).
