Flightless House Flies?

Brad Alexander Dec 17, 2003 05:38 PM

Anyone out there have a current link on where to find Flightless House Flies for sale? I did search and came up empty handed. I only found old links that no longer work.

Thanks,

Brad Alexander

They are selling regular (flying) house flies and I am hoping to find flightless.

As a last resort, I will purchase flying house flies instead of flightless.

Thanks again,

Brad

Why dont you just buy a regular house Fly culture..then pluck the wings off of the flies to feed. (yeah i know its cruel, but dont you want your chameleon to eat?)

I bought some flies from skipio's and am very pleased. They do fly, although a few do hatch out with deformed wings. I found that if you cool the flies first(I keep them in a large jar in a sunporch that gets no heat and is uninsulated, so that it is about 5 or ten degrees warmer than outside(which is cold here in Ohio durring the winter), then you can easily take them out and tear off a wing. If you have a lot of chams this could take a while, but for a few it works great. You only have to pull off 1 wing, not both. You can get several thousand pupa at skippio's for like 10 bucks, its well worth it. Hope this helps!

I still have yet to see a flightless housefly.... Someone was looking for them on here 2 months ago or so and I don't think anyone ever found them. As far as I know they're just a rumor but I may be wrong.

I know where to get them but it is in the UK. They are called "Curly Flies" and are a great little treat. You`d be better looking for them in caged bird classifieds rather than Reptiles because apparently some soft/waxbills eat them.
I have used them before but they are quite small and My veiled is not interested in anything that small now!
Here is the link, it should get you started on the right road!

1 Chameleo Calyptratus, 1 Varanus Exanthematicus, 1 Morelia Spilota Sp.??

I think there might be USDA restrictions on importing bugs from the UK. If you can get them, let us know!
In the meantime, try skipio's! The guy sells the fly pupae by the ounce (2000 pupae per ounce, so he says). Really a good deal. You have to order them via phone, as there's no ordering link at the website. The guy is really nice and really seems to know his flies.
BTW, all my chameleons LOVE the houseflies and have absolutely NO problems catching them, even though they fly. Great for finicky eaters or just to put a little pep into a bored chameleon!

Hi: I have talked with the owner of Flyculture.com. They are currently in trial stages of Flightless Housefly production. Its not ready yet, but they sound like they have been in experimental stages with this longer then others that I know and may possibly have it ready first. I check with them from time to time for Dart Frog stuff and I'll let you guys know when he's ready to roll out the product. Maggie
