Egg retaining question?

brettbender Jun 03, 2003 12:58 PM

Hi all,
My female het albino layed 8 good eggs on Sunday but she retained 1 egg. What should I do? Will she pass it in time?
Thanks in advance.
Brett

Brett,
See if you can move the egg slightly toward the cloaca by apply steady, firm (but not real real hard) pressure on the egg, pressing your thumb on it up through the belly. Ideally, the egg will move a little and NOT "spring" back into place. That being teh case, it is moving through the oviduct and might be expelled if you give it a few more days. Alternately, if it's moving real easily now, you can just continue that pressure and push it out. eggs not laid in a normal fasion are almost never good, so i don't think you need to worry about "saving" it. Just make sure your hands are clean and maybe wet--you don't want to expel any oviduct with the egg, just the egg. I hope that makes sense.

If the egg is real high up and NOT moving when you apply pressure, you probably need to see your vet after a couple days, may require surgical removal. they can also administer calcium & oxytosin (meant for mammals but some people thing it causes a productive reaction in snakes too) to stimulate laying. Give me a call if you want.

Terry,
Thanks for the advice. I will give it a try tonight when I get home from work.
Thanks again!
Brett
