Coccidia levels...

Ody Dec 17, 2003 06:26 PM

I know I've heard here that all dragons have some level of coccidia in them, but is there an acceptable level that could show up in a fecal test and they'd still be OK? I just got 2 new dragons in the end of last week and finally got a sample in to the vet to check out. The tech there said there was coccidia in it, but that the levels were really low, and that they should be fine. She said if they start to get a runny stool that I should bring them in to get checked.

So should I be OK for now, and just keep an eye on them for a while (I'm monitoring their weight too)? Obviously I plan on keeping them seperated from the rest of my dragons for at least a couple months, and getting a couple more stool samples checked out too.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated. Thanks!

Coccidia is not measured in numbers like a blood count, it's an eyeball thing. I do not generally treat for light coccidia alone. I am more concerned when there are multiple parasites present and their is symptomology. you might want to try para-zap as a precautionary measure. It's a natural product, not a harsh medication. It can keep the coccida levels from getting out of control.
