home from FL - Luna dehydrated

lele Dec 17, 2003 06:44 PM

Hi gang,

I hopped on here to catch up - HA! lots of new "faces" and way too many posts :-/

My friend, Deb, did great with my critters but Luna was difficult re: water. Her eyes are OK, she looks a little thin (going thru the 6 month old veiled - "I don't want to eat that!" stage) but a recent poop shows some orange and yellow in urates. She did not drink for me tonight (just got home a couple hours ago) and her skin is baggy and staying up a for a bit when I "pinch" it.

So, my question is: Should I just go ahead and give her a warm bathing/shower for a few minutes for quick hydration or just try and get her to drink? Like I said, she is not too bad (I was only gone for a week) and Deb said she drank during most, but not all, visits.

What do you think?

I have four chams and I generally put them in the shower for thirty minutes every week. This it seems helps them stay hydrated and humidified. I live in California and the water is pretty expensive so I don't know how it is where you live but what I would do is put Luna in the bath tub on a ficus and turn the shower on to luke warm and leave her in their for thirty minutes. I would leave the curtain shut for added humidity and to reduce risk of escape. Other than that I would spray her regularly and leave a dripper over her cage. Hope this helps

yes, I did realize that yours was in jest, too. It kind of s....s that cyber-communication can so easily be misconstrued that we feel we need to point out our intentions and then any humor/fun is lost!

I was actually on the west coast of FL (never been to Miami and have NO desire to ever go (not meant to offend anyone who may live there!) I told my Mom about the nose/genius posts - she had a good laugh, too

I must of missed the post where you said you were going away.
I've been wondering where you were...and was getting a little worried.
Then yesterday, my daughter and I were at the local pet torture chamber...errr...pet shop, and they had a little leaf cham. They are selling him/her for $80.00...and that little critter made me think of you all over again.
The guy in the pet shop went on and on about how easy the leaf chams are to take care of, because they don't need heat, or UV lighting...and how you just stick them in a fish tank with some crickets, and that's all you have to do.
All the while he's rambling on with this crapola, I couldn't take my eyes off of the dead monitor in the lower fish tank. Nothing but skin and bones laying there with it's head at an odd angle, obviously dead. He said it came from the wholesaler with a URI, and that he's sending it back.
I mentioned to this guy about how a lot of these little chams don't make it...and he said..."yeah, it's that way with any exotic pet...once they get sick...you just let them go. There's nothing you can do for them once they start going downhill".
UGH...I HATE that store. Complaint after complaint has been filed against them...and they still stay in business.

Holy...sorry about that...I just got all caught up in a rant there for a second!
Anyway...I was posting just to say that I'm glad to see you back, and I'm sure with your dilegent loving care Luna will be back to her normal self in no time!

so sorry about the long winded tirade, that really has nothing to do with anything!

Welcome back...and say hello to Luna from Zoe and I.

Hi Kim,

You didn't miss a post - I didn't announce it, I just left, wanted to see who would miss me - LOL! just kidding.

I cannot believe that (actually I guess I can and that's what is so sickening!) this guy said what he did and was trying to sell a leaf cham for $80!!! If they are so "disposable" why sell for so much? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I can barely bring myself into a pet store anymore. Fortunately, I don't have the need to very often.

Thanks for the kudos! Luna drank (finally) this morning and I wrapped her cage in a shower curtain and blasted her little personal humidifier!

Btw, Sonia (anson) and I met while I was in FL and I got to meet all her critters which includes Luna's brother, Stitch, and sister, Ohana (sp?). It was very cool to meet someone from cyber space and many cyber-space herps as well!

It will take more than a "quick" rehydration to make up for her dehydration. Probably it will take several days of increased spraying and attention. If you shower her do it longer, set a humidifier up to fog her cage more often, spray her often, give her softer bodied insects, and she should be OK.

I think she'll be ok. She probably just missed you! (not that she'd ever admit it...)
You can also get some electrolite drops. It's like pedialite for reptiles, only concentrated so you can add it to water or anything you'd like. It's by exoterra i think, and it's called electrolize. I find it usefull to bribe orion with a bug and when she is chewing i drop some mixed with water into her mouth. It will help her get back to normal i think.. You can get a small thing of it for about $3cdn - a lot better than a huge thing of pedialite. You only need one drop mixed with water.

lele Dec 18, 2003 11:38 AM

Thanks for the electrolize tip - I will check into it!

You know, I think she IS admitting that she missed me! She came more than willingly onto my hand, has stayed her happy colors ever since I have been home and didn;t even freak when the cats came into the room (they were on vacation, too so she hadn't seen them for awhile.)

I'm noting some new blue coloration on her casque - my little girl is growing up

I haven't caught up on posts - how is Orion doing??

She's doing really well. I'm building a new cage for her (i thought she was a boy so the one she has is a little large... its ok, but harder to keep warm and humid enough.) but she's getting ansy already. i'll have to put her into her old one (tomorrow probably) until her new one is ready. i thought she'd be ok in the tank for a little longer, she's only been back for two weeks! She is mad though... lol. she tries to climb out the glass.. i don't blame her. she's eating well though. i'll have to get some new pics of her soon!

This is great news! You must be so relieved. With all the losses we have - explained and unexplained - it is heartening when one pulls thru such a crisis! Good care IS essential and Orion, Zoe and others are proof of that

Hi Carlton,

I realize there is no "quick fix" I guess I was just looking for a jump start. Will most chams just sit there and let the water pour over them in a shower or should I stay present to watch for an escape? I did soak her for a few minutes this morning in a few inches of warm water and she really didn't seem to mind much.

She did drink a bit this morning and I wrapped her cage tightly in her shower curtain and blasted her mini humidifier which I keep in her cage. I'm sure she will be fine; all in all she fared quite well. I had her humidifier, the room heater, lights etc. all on timers and even with two snow storms we didn't lose power (amazing!!)

thanks,

lele
