Just bought a Panther Gecko.. I have a food question.

Breathingbywires Dec 17, 2003 07:25 PM

I just got my baby panter home and put her in her tank.. she doesn't seem stressed or anything.. she is eating well and like right away.. and she hasn't hidden at all.. however I ended up dropping in a few more pin heads then I would have liked, will she like my Leo just eat until she isn't hungry anymore?

She is doing good though, she is up on her house and looking around. I'm really happy with her.. (i'm only saying her because it's simpler)

If you just got her, overfeeding isnt a problem. I usually try to fatten up my geckos when I first get them since pet shops and breeders dont really have time to take care of them personally. The gecko will eat as much as she can before she's full but every time you feed her this way she will get fatter and fatter. This is not good as their body shuts down after a while since it cant deal with the fat (big problem in some captive geckos due to lack of exersize). I recommend feeding set amounts so she doesnt get too fat but also stays in shape. Like I said though, for the first week or two put some fat on her just so she can take the proper feeding schedule.

Ok good.. I figured it was a good sign that she wasn't to stressed from the ride home since it was like almost an hour drive because she was eating right away... just I dropped to many in and I see today there are still some running around. She is beautiful.. nameless but beautiful. I think my Leo is jealous.. lol They can sense I think!

Some breeders do take care of ALL of their animals personally. The time I have raising the hatchlings and juvies, before selling, is extremely important to me. I don't breed to make money (as only a few can), so I cherish that time. Antonm don't view in black and white...The insects are probably too small. Picta have large heads and strong jaws, so feed crickets the length of your geckos head. I only feed picta pinheads on their first feeding and that is just to be on the super safe side and the idea of "warming them up" to oral feeding instead of a yolk. Don't go too big; if the gecko has the cricket half in and half out for 30 seconds (if you do the length rule, this shouldn't be a problem), go smaller.
Good luck,
Ashton

Sorry I meant commercial breeders and suppliers that deal with petshops and such, not private ones. Thats why I said most...
