fire belly newt.....alge build up

treefrogmatthew Dec 17, 2003 08:30 PM

Anyone had problems with alge build up in the water section of their fire belly newt enclosure? I have a pump to keep the water circulating but the alge still seems to build up. I change 3/4 the water every 2 weeks and a full change every month.

Any ideas will be greatly helpful

Do you have a light fixture over the enclosure, and if so, how many hours of the day? Sometimes, adding live plants will help compensate for an algae bloom. Also, you might want to test your water quality. I've had an excessive amount of nitrates in water and this will also cause algae build up.
