Concern for my new Three Toed Box Turtle

LoveToFoxtrot Dec 17, 2003 09:23 PM

I was given an approx. 1 1/4 inch long three toed box turtle as an early Christmas present, and I am concerned about his eyes. He was captive bred and I was told that the breeder said to "give him a heat light during the day, soak him once a week, and feed him Romaine lettuce". Hmm. I have him set up in an open top ten gallon tank with a concentrated 50 watt heat light at one corner. The temp at the warm end is approx. 87-90 degrees and the cooler end it is approx. 78 degrees. During the night the light is turned off and the temp is about 72. The humidity is maintained between 75 and 90 percent, only slight more dry at the basking spot. He has a shallow dish of water to wade in. He is kept on sphagnum moss, not the ground type. He has been offered romaine lettuce, orange, canned low fat dog food, and banana. He ate some dog food yesterday and seemed to enjoy it. He has been in his pool twice. Most of the time, he is staying burrowed in the medium temp part of his tank, which concerns me. He is active enough when I pick him up and put him on the carpet or hold him, but he has been staying in his burrow all the time when he is undisturbed. Also, when he is active, he swipes at his eyes with his front feet quite often like they are bothering him and he blinks with force. His eyes look somewhat puffy and he is reluctant to open them. If anyone has any suggestions as to what is happening, please let me know what I can do about it. He has no noticable nasal discharge or difficulty breathing. Thank you in advance for your help!

well first off.. a 10G (IMHO) is way to small..
swollen eyes can be caused by a few things.. 1) low humidity.. you sure your turtles humidity is really that high?
2)Vitamin A Deficiency.. you say he's only had dog food too eat.. which isn't the best thing in the world.
3) Upper Resperitory Infection.. could be an early sign.
you should read more about these and you should be able to determine which is the problem..
also read Tess Cook's site http://www.boxturtlesite.org/bxbook.html
lots of helpful advice on that site

also.. a box turtle shouldn't be kept in an aquarium.. most the time turtles kept in an aquarium live dull lives and die a long and sometimes painful death.. I've heard some young turtles adapt.. but some dont... if you can't change his habitat right away put some paper around the tank so he can't see out.

Have you tried soaking the little guy on a daily basis?
I fill a gallon jug with tap water and let it stand (open) for 24hrs or more to allow chlorine to evaporate off, and the hatchlings use the resulting 'conditioned' water.
My hatchlings swipe at their eyes when they get flecks of substrate in them, but watch yours closely, because it could also be wiping its mouth: mine do that, too, when they get a mouthful of substrate along with their food. Soaking them can aid them with the removal process.
I have observed that hatchlings spend alot of time hiding and sleeping, so that in and of itself wouldn't worry me greatly.
Definitely consult the recommended website for more care and feeding information, as the range of foods should be expanded.

Stephanie
