Getting them to breed

Melle Dec 17, 2003 10:17 PM

Hello,

I decided a while ago that I want to start breeding my leopard geckos. In my one tank, I kept two of my older females, both breeding age and 80 grams. I got a male, but i got him younger and smaller than them and I put him in with my females (they all get along fine, I wasnt even worried about it.) Well the male of course has since then gotten bigger and is almost their size (only not as chunky). I dont think they have mated at all. He's been in there since august and neither are or have been gravid. I do realize that its winter and they may not breed in these months.

So anyhoo, I have one more female that I am keeping seperate until she puts on a little more weight to put with the male. Would I have better success if I put her with the females, took the male out and kept him seperate for a while, and then added him to the all female tank? Thanks for any input

your best bet (i've had similar problem in past month) is to if you can get another male gecko and (i actually put the male i wanted to breed in with the females and held another male near the females until the breeding male became feisty and then i removed the other male, HOlding this male the whole time to avoid fighting) and this immediatly got the breeding male going however montey told me a safer way to do it is to get feces from another male and put it in and the male will smell the other males scent and it will have the same effect. Its worth a shot and a lot safer to avoid fighting.

Well..the breeding process isnt that easy and takes some time.. have you tried dropping the temps to around 60-75 for 3-4 weeks then bring it back up to around 90 and feed them weel for about 2 weeks then they should start breeding..hope this helps! good luck
