Anyone have "Veterinary Management of Tortoises and Turtles" by Stuart McArthur? m

Sohni Dec 17, 2003 11:01 PM

And is it worth having? I've been on the wait list for it at Amazon for a few months now, but I don't know when the U.S. edition will be published.

I could have sworn that I had a copy but from what I remember there was nothing remarkable about it. It is a rather small, general book.
Dr. McArthur is a cool down to earth vet that has a pretty good reputation in the UK. In the process of trying to find another source for you I found that he (to my pleasant surprise) is coming out with another book. It is a veterinary book on just Turtles and tortoises and is listed as being 800 pages long. This sounds exciting. It was supposed to be out this month but as the publishing of herp books goes it will not be out until (next month?)... It is listed for $190 USD and can be purchased online. I’d recommend you get that one if you were only going to get one med book for your tortoises. If not that one than I think that Dr. Maders book is still the best general reference even though many experts believe it is out of date.

I wonder if the new book is the one I'm waiting for at Amazon. They say it hasn't been released yet. I thought it was the old book that hadn't been published in the U.S., but maybe I'm wrong.

What is the title of Mader's book? I'll have to see if I can locate it.

Both books are published in the US by this company called Blackwell. If you order from them direct they knock of 10 or 20 bucks but I believe Amazon pays the shipping so that might offset the savings.
If your paying 190 bucks that is the new book... if it is about 40 bucks that is the old book which I believe was published in 96.
Reptile Medicine and Surgery by Douglas R. Mader
I think it is out of print but I'll bet you can get a good price on Amazon.

Hello there!

Seasons greetings!

The second book "Medicine and Surgery of Tortoises and Turtles" is not just "McArthur", but is multi-authored and multi-edited. It has substantial contribution from all the veterinarians who are passionate about chelonians and active in ARAV. It is also international - in as much as it has European and Nth American Input as well as UK contribution. One of the Authors is now the zoovet at Jo'burg! I also took a few pictures when I visted Asia and worked with Marine Turtles!

I hope that when you do eventually see it you will like it. It only took me Six years to collate! I have tried to collate everything I could find up to the time of press in the veterinary literature and fortunately a fair number of co-authors have kept me in line.
The co-editors are

Stuart McArthur
Roger Wilkinson
Jean Meyer
Steve Hernanadez Divers
Charles Innis

There are a fair number of other authors, and the number of people who contributed pictures is also pretty large! As you say, it is very long and has over 1000 colour plates. That is why Blackwell have put such a high price to it. The price is beyond my control, but I promise we have all tried to include as much helpful information and plates as we can

The first book I wrote about tortoises "veterinary management of Tortoises and Turtles" is a very basic entry level book, now seriously out of date... dont bother with that one... I wrote it in the '80s when I was a cattle vet that couldnt find any useful data on what to do with sick Testudo sp that came my way. This second book is my way of saying sorry for any mistakes in the first book!

I already have my copy of the second book and although I am biased, I do really like it... I suspect they are printing and binding them as I write. I was hoping for a pre-christmas release.... but never mind! Looks like the start of Feb from where I am sitting

Happy Christmas everyone

regards

Sorry I forgot to mentinon that it was a concerted effort by some of the best turtle/tortoise vets of today but I don't think I could have explained it better than the man whos name appears on the book. After reading this I haven't been this excited about a book since the anouncement of the release of Maders book.
One thing I'd like to mention is that I monitor many different outlets and book dealers for new releases and I found this by accident. I was very surprised to see that it was supposed to be released this month (now 03/04, from what I hear)(which is the norm with most new herp books) It doesen't seem like it was advertised too well but it sounds like it will be a fantastic addition to any tortoise keepers library.
Thank you, Dr. McArthur, for taking the time for the clarification. Cheers.
